AI Anime Art: Style Guide and Prompt Templates

"Anime style" is not a style. It covers sixty years of very different production techniques, and asking for it generically gets you an averaged, characterless result. Naming an era and a medium is what makes the difference.

90s cel versus modern digital

Cel animation means hand-painted cels: limited flat colour palettes, visible line weight variation, slightly desaturated colour, film grain. Modern digital anime is cleaner — uniform line weight, gradient shading, high saturation, rim lighting. Prompting for either means naming those properties, not naming a decade.

Shoujo, chibi and the rest

Shoujo brings softer lines, larger eyes, pastel palettes and screentone-like textures. Chibi is a proportion instruction rather than a style one, and combines with any of them.

A template with six slots

[subject and pose], [era and medium], [line quality], [palette], [lighting], [background treatment]. Filling all six produces far more consistent results than a long unstructured sentence, and it makes iteration possible because you can change one slot at a time. Why tags beat sentences here

Anime models are trained overwhelmingly on tagged illustration data, so the vocabulary they respond to is the vocabulary of those tags. A sentence has to be interpreted before it can be matched; a tag matches directly. This is the one image category where prose is measurably the weaker input, and it surprises people arriving from photographic models where the opposite is true.

It also changes how you iterate. Because each tag is a discrete unit, you can add, remove or reorder one and see exactly what it contributed — which is far more informative than rewriting a paragraph and hoping.

Converting a photo instead

For photo conversion the rules invert — the pose and composition come from your photo, so the prompt only has to carry style. Keep it short and let the source do the structural work. If you want to lift a style off an image you admire rather than describe it, image to prompt will name it for you.
