Removing Backgrounds from Product Photos: A Practical Guide
What marketplaces actually require, where automatic background removal fails, and how to shoot so it does not.
Amazon requires a pure white background on the main product image. Etsy and Shopify do not require it but reward it, because a consistent catalogue reads as a real shop. This is the single cheapest improvement available to most small sellers.
Where automatic removal fails
- Fine strands of hair or fur against a busy background.
- Transparent and reflective materials — glass, cellophane, polished metal.
- Any edge where the subject and the background are close in colour.
The fix is at capture time
Put the product on a surface that contrasts with it, light it evenly enough that there is no deep shadow merging into the background, and leave space around all four edges. Two minutes of arrangement saves far more than any amount of post-processing.
Shadows are a decision, not a leftover
A cut-out with no shadow floats: the eye reads it as a sticker rather than an object on a surface. A soft contact shadow under the base is usually enough, and it is the difference between a listing photo that looks composited and one that looks photographed. Marketplaces that demand a pure white background still allow the shadow, as long as the background itself stays white.
Keep the original cut-out with transparency and composite from it, rather than saving a flattened white version and re-cutting it later. The second cut is always worse — you are now separating white from white.
PNG or JPG
Export as PNG when you need transparency — for compositing, for print, for cutting machines. Export as JPG only when the background is already flattened and file size matters.
A cut-out is a starting point, not the finish
